Local alumni, parents, family and friends of the College gathered with currents students in the Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Harrisburg areas on Mar. 30 to launch the 2008 Juniata Job Shadow program. Now in its seventh year, the program originated in D.C. as an opportunity for students to network with alumni and explore possible careers. It has expanded to other regions and now includes parents and friends as volunteer hosts.
The shadow program relies on the generosity of volunteers. Some of these gracious alumni and parents organized kick-off events in each area and others served as shadow hosts, offering dinner and housing on Sunday night before taking their students to work with them on Monday.
The JC-DC Alumni Club continued the tradition of combining the job shadow kick-off with its annual spring meeting. More than 40 alumni, parents, family, friends and students gathered at the home of Jodie (Monger) '88 and Mark Gray in McLean, VA. After feasting on the delicious food prepared by Jodie's sister Janice, guests gathered and were introduced to the seven student participants. David Corman '77, president of the club and, Jodie (Monger) Gray '88, College Trustee and host gave an update on what is happening at Juniata and in the club.
The CPA Juniata Club continued followed up last year's first-time success with another outstanding program. Christopher '92 and Annette (Reeder) '93 Bair hosted a reception at the Offices of Deloitte Consulting LLP, giving 9 student participants and 2 other student guests the opportunity to mingle with local alumni, parents and family. David Meadows '98, Assistant Director of Alummni Relations, thanked the hosts for their generosity and congratulated the students on using the Juniata network to their advantage. Erik Evans, Associate Vice President of Advancement also brought greetings from the College, giving an update on Enrollment and Founders Hall and taking questionsl.
The Delaware Valley Alumni Club returned to its traditional house gathering for this year’s job shadow event as Nicole (Dirato) ’01 and Brian Engard ’01 hosted a total of 14 guests during a leisurely Sunday afternoon in Fairless Hills, Pa. Guests (including current students, alumni and parents) began arriving around 2:00 p.m. and were welcomed by smiling faces and delicious food prepared by the hosts. Along with four student participants, the College was represented by Director of Alumni Relations Bub Parker. Following a social time, former Alumni Council president and job shadow lead volunteer Ty Furman ’90 welcomed those in attendance before turning the program over to Bub Parker, who updated the group on College Hill happenings and answered questions. In addition, the students who were participating in the job shadow took the time to speak on why they were interested in the job shadow and what their plans were after the academic year comes to a close.
