Question: What do you get when you combine 25 current students, two faculty members, a Vice President from the College, engaged alumni and generous hosts who reside in the Sonoma Valley in California? Answer: One of the best Juniata College alumni events ever.
Juniata sent 25 students and a pair of faculty members (Cy deVries and Jim Borgardt) to the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at Dominican University in San Rafael, California. Juniata graduates Tim '72 and Kathy (Stavru) '72 Statton decided to take advantage of the College Hill presence in the area and offered to host an alumni event at their home in Sonoma, California. In addition, a group of alumni came out to mingle with fellow graduates and meet the College's contingent, including Vice President for Advancement and Marketing John Hille. To complete the guest list, there were two prospective students and a parent of one of the prospective students in attendance.
The beautiful view of Sonoma Valley and the spacious home served as the perfect location for the gathering. The group enjoyed outdoor temperatures of 75 degrees on the gorgeous sunny late afternoon. There was seamless mingling between all of the guests, while the hosts provided a southwestern theme for the reception and dinner. Everyone asked Tim about the famous “quarter for a stamp” story that started him on his path - if you ever meet Tim, please do not hesitate to ask about it.
Following dessert, Tim was kind enough to give an extended tour of the house – highlights for the students were the spiral staircase, wine cellar, and home theatre (see picture #21 in the link to the gallery above).
Special thanks to Tim and Kathy for organizing and hosting this wonderful event!
