The faculty comprises all persons having appointment for the instruction of students except instructional assistants and laboratory assistants. The faculty of the College shall consist of four distinct groups: Ranked Full-Time Faculty, Ranked Pro-Rata Faculty, Part-Time Per Course Faculty, and Special Appointment Faculty. Specific contract types (Section 2.2) and other specific contractual rights and responsibilities shall pertain to each specific group as defined in this Faculty Handbook in appropriate sections of Section 2. In particular, Part-Time Per Course Faculty and Special Appointment Faculty have limited rights and responsibilities: these are fully defined in this Section and in the sections on Evaluation (2.5) and Severance (2.8).

2.1.1 Ranked Faculty

A ranked faculty member is a full-time or pro-rata employee of the College who has been appointed to one of the four regular academic ranks: Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. Full-time Faculty

  1. Primarily have full-time teaching duties or have teaching and other duties equivalent to a full-time teaching load (see Section 2.11.2),
  2. Fulfill the duties and responsibilities of faculty members (see Section 2.9ff); and
  3. Hold academic rank as described in Section 2.1.2. Pro-rata Faculty

Pro-rata Faculty are faculty members who are ranked as defined in Section 2.1.1 and who are given an appointment less than full-time but equal to half-time or more. They may be employed on probationary, one-year, or three-year contracts. Such Pro-rata Faculty have pro-rata contractual rights to pro-rata promotion, tenure, sabbatical leave and fringe benefits as provided in the Faculty Handbook. They are full voting members of the faculty and have, on a pro-rata basis, responsibilities for advising, service on committees and all other responsibilities of full-time faculty members as detailed in the Faculty Handbook.

2.1.2 Criteria for Appointment to Specific Ranked Faculty Status

At the time of initial appointment of a Full-time or Pro-rata faculty member, the Provost, in consultation with the Department Chair, makes a judgment about rank for the initial contract using the criteria described below. Written copies of the decision will be provided to the department involved, the individual involved, and the Personnel Evaluation Committee. Thereafter rank changes are subject to Section 2.6.

Throughout these sections on specific ranks, a college of "recognized standing" shall mean a college or university accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations, or a college or university of international standing as determined by the Provost. Instructor

Appointment to the rank of Instructor normally requires, at minimum, a Master's degree, or equivalent graduate study, in the field or discipline of the appointment. Professional recommendations speaking to the promise of teaching effectiveness and scholarly growth contribute to determination of rank, as does clear evidence of commitment to continued study toward a higher academic degree. Assistant Professor

Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor normally requires the candidate to hold a terminal degree in his/her field; in this respect, Juniata normally recognizes the academic doctorate as the terminal degree, but the Provost and the President have in the past accepted such specialized degrees as the MFA, MSW, and MBA as terminal. Such special cases are at the discretion of the Provost and President and specifics of those cases must be recorded in the initial contract upon first appointment. Associate Professor

Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor normally requires a terminal degree in the faculty member's field and a minimum of five years of full-time college teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor. The candidate is required to demonstrate the teaching effectiveness and scholarship expected for an Associate Professor as stated in Section Professor

Appointment to the rank of Professor normally requires a terminal degree in the faculty member's field and a minimum of ten years of full-time college teaching, five at the rank of Associate Professor. The candidate is required to demonstrate teaching effectiveness and scholarship expected for a Professor as stated in Section

2.1.3 Part-time Per Course Faculty

A Part-time Per Course faculty member is usually a part-time temporary employee of the College who has been assigned one of the following temporary academic titles: Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Adjunct Professor, Adjunct Associate Professor, or Adjunct Assistant Professor.

Part-time per course faculty:

  1. Do not carry a full-time teaching load;
  2. Usually have no other faculty duties and responsibilities, except those listed below and teaching related duties specified in Section 2.9;
  3. Meet or exceed the criteria of the appropriate temporary academic titles; (see sections,,;
  4. Are selected in the manner set forth below in Section 2.3;
  5. Always receive A Term Contract (see Section;
  6. Receive no fringe benefits, no tuition remissions; and
  7. Do not accrue time towards tenure, promotion, sabbatical; Part-time Per Course faculty are expected to be available at least 1-1/2 hours per week per each course taught to advise students regarding their coursework. Lecturer

Lecturers are selected by Department Chairs in consultation with the Provost are appointed by the Provost.

Lecturers are hired to teach specific courses on a Term Contract basis. The position usually does not lead to or count toward tenure, or lead to promotion to the regular academic ranks.

Selection of lecturers should be consistent with the academic standards of the College. A person assigned this title should meet or exceed the minimal requirements set forth for Instructor. In lieu of these requirements, considerable experience in an appropriate technical, artistic, or professional field may be substituted. A lecturer may attend faculty meeting without vote. Senior Lecturer

This title may be assigned to a part-time per course teaching faculty member in recognition of distinguished teaching service to the College, its students, and its faculty over a period of at least five years. Assignment of this title is made by the President, upon the recommendation of the appropriate Department Chair and the Provost. A senior lecturer may attend faculty meeting without vote. Adjunct Professor by Rank

A faculty member who teaches on a part-time per course basis for the College, and who is a full-time ranked faculty member of another institution of post-secondary education of recognized standing or has other full-time employment, will be assigned this rank by the College. Such rank shall be equal to that at the other institution. Should the institution not use rank, the title of Adjunct Professor will be used. An adjunct professor may attend faculty meeting without vote.

2.1.4 Special Appointment Faculty Emeritus (Emerita) Status of Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor

Any ranked Full-time faculty member who retires (rather than resigns) from Juniata College and has held a full-time appointment at the College for at least 10 years, including leaves, may be recommended to the Board of Trustees for consideration of emeritus (emerita) status at the highest rank he or she has attained. Other faculty members may occasionally be considered by the Board for emeritus status by special recommendation of the President after consultation with the Provost and the Personnel Evaluation Committee.

No compensation accrues to this status unless by mutual agreement between the President and the individual. The individual may be offered a part-time term contract by the President to teach or fulfill other duties. In such cases, supplementary benefits, if any, will be set forth in the contract and such term contract is limited to less than half-time faculty status. An Emeritus Faculty person may attend faculty meeting without vote. Visiting Appointments

All visiting appointments are for a limited period of time with no intent of ongoing employment. Visiting appointments are reserved for faculty members of other institutions, professors emeriti, and persons distinguished in their fields. A second category of visiting faculty includes persons appointed to replace faculty members on sabbatical or other leaves of absence. All such visiting appointments may attend faculty meetings without vote. Service in replacing faculty on sabbatical or other leave does not count for tenure, promotion, or sabbatical leave unless such service is recognized by the Provost at the time of offering a probationary contract. Artist/Writer/Scholar-in-Residence

The College may appoint distinguished artists, writers, poets, scholars to the special faculty status of Artist/Writer/Scholar-in-Residence. Such appointments shall be full-time or part-time depending on the needs of the College. The appointments are term contracts. The appointment of an Artist/Writer/Scholar-in-Residence does not prejudice the academic personnel rights of any other faculty member in respect to the contractual policies of this Handbook. An Artist/Writer/Scholar-in-Residence does not participate in faculty meetings. Instructional Assistants

The College may appoint on an annual basis part-time instructional assistants as needed to carry out the instruction of students within departments. Such persons are selected by Department Chairs for their expertise in particular areas in consultation with the Provost and are appointed by the Provost. These instructional assistants are supervised by a Ranked Faculty member who is responsible for grading of students taught by the instructional assistant. Since instructional assistants are not ranked members of the faculty, they do not participate in faculty meetings, nor are they eligible for tenure, or promotion into the regular faculty ranks, or sabbatical leaves.

Instructional assistants may have parking privileges, free admission to athletic and cultural events, use of athletic facilities and Bookstore discounts. Summer Session Faculty

Summer Session faculty may be ranked or unranked. They are selected by the Provost. In accordance with the needs of the College summer session, faculty are offered term contracts for the teaching of specific courses.

Time spent teaching in summer session does not count towards tenure or promotion or sabbatical leave.

Summer Session faculty are expected to be available for a reasonable amount of time to counsel students regarding their coursework. While it is difficult to specify the appropriate amount of time a faculty member should be available because of the varying types of courses offered and number of students enrolled, the amount of time allotted should be based on one and one-half hours per week per twenty students enrolled in a three-hour course.

2.1.5 Administrators with Faculty Rank

Administrators with faculty rank come to the faculty rank by one of two routes. Some are appointed initially as administrators and then receive a faculty appointment as a way of facilitating their work or in order for them to teach a course on occasion. Others are initially full-time faculty members who later receive administrative appointments.

Persons in the first category are employed for their expertise in administrative positions. Their teaching is secondary. Persons in the second category, originally employed for their disciplinary expertise, are normally on subsequent contracts or are tenured.

The President, the Provost, and academic administrators with faculty rank may vote in faculty meetings. The Provost, in consultation with the Faculty Executive Committee, rules on individual cases of eligibility to vote for administrators with faculty rank whose classification as an academic administrator is questionable.
