Eagles Baseball Team Reels off Five Straight Wins

BASEBALL (14-15, 7-9 Commonwealth): April 22 at Penn State-Altoona (2); April 23 at Albright* (2); April 25 vs. Susquehanna*; April 26 at Susquehanna* (2).

The Eagles sported a record of 5-2 on the week, which featured five straight wins. Juniata dropped the first two games of the week, but then swept a doubleheader against Penn State-Altoona and then took all three from defending conference champion Lebanon Valley. On the mound, five different pitchers earned wins for the Eagles. Jayme Fye (Philipsburg/Philipsburg), Eric Bridenbaugh (Central/Martinsburg), Eric Albright (Penn Cambria/Ashville) and Ryan O'Donnell (Lebanon/Lebanon) earned victories out of the starting rotation, and Derek Tyson (Penns Valley/Penns Valle) claimed a win out of the bullpen. Kodi Hockenberry (Red Land/Lewisberry) led the team with nine hits and a .429 batting average for the week. Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) and Adam Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) each batted .389 for the week. Camberg had four RBI and two doubles, while Garner had a home run and five RBI. Jesse Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) led the team with nine RBI along with seven hits and a triple, and David Saintz (Titusville/Titusville) had seven hits and six runs scored. Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) scored a team-high seven runs, while Marc Frailey (Middletown/Middletown) added another home run for Juniata.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (17-9, 7-7 EIVA Tait:
The Eagles closed out their season as they dropped a hard-fought five-game match against Princeton University in the quarterfinals of the EIVA tournament. Neil Lukas (Fairport, N.Y./East Windsor, N.J.) had a match-high 20 kills while hitting .531. Chris Jones (Lower Merion/Wayne) and Jason Bartholow (North Harford/Baltimore, Md.) were both in double figures with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Ricky Ziegler (Northeastern/Manchester) tossed out 69 assists, one shy of his career high. Brian Dinning (Penn Hills/Pittsburgh) had a team-high nine digs, along with nine kills. Cordt Withum (Penn Manor/Holtwood) registered a team-high four blocks for Juniata. Ryan Genova (Antietam/Reading) also put away nine digs.
SOFTBALL (17-4, 7-3 Commonwealth): April 22 vs. Lycoming (2); April 23 vs. Elizabethtown* (2); April 26 at Messiah* (2)

A 4-2 week for Juniata, as they swept a pair of conference doubleheaders and established a new school record for wins in a season. Juniata took both games of a doubleheader against Susquehanna, then won both games against Widener to close the week. The previous school record for wins in a season for a softball team was 14. Eagle pitchers Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) and Lizzie Bartosik (Penn/Granger, In.) had nearly identical stats for the week. Both players were 2-1 for the week, with a shutout apiece and nine strikeouts for both players. Offensively Sarah Patterson (Danville/Danville) batted .545 for the week with four RBI, while Allison D'Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) led the unit with eight hits. Amber Helsel (Claysbur-Kimmel/Claysburg) continued her hot play as she hit .389 with seven runs scored, four double, a triple and three RBI. Becky Herr (Hamburg/Hamburg) also hit .389 with seven RBI, a double and a home run. Leanne Leymeister (Blue Mountain/Orwigsburg), Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) and Cass Dutzer (Danville/Riverside) batted .385, .381 and .333 for the week respectively.
TRACK & FIELD: April 26 at Dickinson Invitational.
Juniata competed at the Penn State Invitational which featured the Eagles taking on Penn State and Richmond on the men's side and those teams along with Cornell on the men's side. For the women, the Eagles fared best in the throwing events. Andrea Denkovich (Greencastle/Greencastle) placed fifth in the shot put, third in the discus and fifth in hammer throw. Cheryn Courtney (Mercer/Mercer) placed fourth in the discus and sixth in the hammer. Kira Troutman (Line Mountain/Valley View) was third in the javelin while Stefanie Ryknewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) and Meredith Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) were fourth and fifth in the 400-meter dash. Rynkewitz also placed sixth in the 200-meter. On the men's side, Shawn Miller (Altoona/Altoona) placed second in the pole vault to lead the team. Scott Shacreaw (Blairsville/Black Lick) placed sixth in the hammer throw while Jason Boyer (Indian Valley/Belleville) finished 10th in the javelin to round out the Eagles' scoring.
MEN'S TENNIS (3-9, 2-5 Commonwealth):
Juniata fell in two conference matches to close out their regular season. Juniata lost a tight battle against Susquehanna by a 4-3 score and then managed one point against Elizabethtown. Against Susquehanna Neil Eicher (Altoona/Altoona) won a tight three-set match at number one singles 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. David Bullock (Central Bucks East/Jamison) picked up a win at third singles and Osman Homurlu (Tarsus American School/Cresson) also earned a singles win. Eicher and Bullock came the closest to earning a doubles point as they fell by an 8-4 margin. Against Elizabethtown, Bullock was the only Eagle to claim a point with his 6-3, 6-1 win at the third singles position. Bullock and Homurlu were within striking distance at the second double position as they fell by an 8-5 tally.
