Eagles Tennis Rolls Past Lycoming

Sarah Roby cruised to relatively easy wins in singles and doubles action as Juniata downed Lycoming.

Huntingdon, Pa.? The Juniata College women?s tennis team insured itself the program?s first winning season since 2000 on the strength of a 7-2 victory over Lycoming Saturday afternoon in Huntingdon. The win improved Juniata to 6-3 on the year, while Lycoming fell to 0-7.
Juniata is a perfect 5-0 in non-conference matches in 2005, after going winless in 2004 against non-conference opponents.

Juniata picked up a pair of wins to start the day in doubles action. Ashley Andrews (Altoona/Altoona) and Caroline Weisser (York Suburban/York) picked up the win at first doubles by a 9-8 score while Ye Kyung Kwon (Cumberland Valley/Enola) and Sarah Roby (Red Land/Lewisberry) notched a dominating 8-1 victory at third doubles.

Andrews and Weiser then matched their doubles success with straight set wins at first and second singles respectively. Andrews claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory and Weisser recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The Eagles then swept fourth, fifth and sixth singles to seal the win. Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) was the winner at fourth singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Roby claimed her second win of the match as she notched a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the fifth position. Megan Carpenter then capped the win with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at sixth singles.

Juniata will be back in action for a critical conference match-up against Susquehanna on Tuesday. With a 1-2 record in Commonwealth action the Eagles are still in contention for a conference postseason berth.
