Eagles Run Past Messi

Justin Fritzius posted one of his best finishes of the 2005 season as Juniata took on Gettysburg and Messiah.

Grantham, Pa. ? Facing conference rival Messiah and regionally ranked Gettysburg, the Juniata College men?s and women?s cross country teams both earned wins over one opponent but couldn?t top the other in a tri-meet held in Grantham Saturday afternoon. The Juniata men topped Messiah by a 19-43 score but fell to Gettysburg 23-32. The Juniata women?s squad rolled past Gettysburg 25-46, while they fell to the Falcons 21-34.


As he has in each of the team?s previous races, Juniata senior Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) paced the men?s team as he placed second overall with a time of 28:28. Earning the second spot for the Eagles was senior Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) who covered the course in a time of 29:21 which was good for a sixth-place overall finish. Just one second behind him in seventh place was Mike Chirdon (Riverview/Verona). Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) posted a time of 29:59 to place 10th overall in the race and finish as the fourth runner for the Blue and Gold. Rounding out the top-five for the Eagles, and finished just six seconds behind Vella was Ryan Conrad (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) who placed 11th in the race.


Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) claimed the top finish for the Juniata women in the race as she posted a solid time of 20:11 to earn a third-place finish. Coming home second overall for Juniata and fourth in the meet was fellow-senior Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) who earned a time of 20:38. Juniata?s top-five all then came home inside the top-10 as Meghan Jones (Meadville/Meadville), Aubrey Cyphert (Seneca/North East) and Lia Bella (Morris Catholic/Rockaway, N.J.) placed eight, ninth and 10th respectively. The trio was separated by seven seconds as Jones ran a time of 21:21, followed by Cyphert at 21:27 and Bella at 21:28.

The Eagles get back into action next Saturday with an invitational at Penn State-Altoona.
