In an effort to improve the computing resources on Juniata's campus while remaining fiscally responsible, Campus Technology Services has developed a computing equipment replacement plan. Computer Labs

In an effort to provide better technology and to take advantage of the student mobile initiative, CTS has been evaluating the computer labs on campus.  By budgeting to replace all computers in public labs every three years, CTS will ensure that technology in computer labs will remain a highlight of the Juniata education.  To achieve this goal it will be necessary for the location and number of machines in some of these labs to change to combine resources and avoid overlap.

Q: Which labs are considered 'public labs' and will be replaced by CTS? (view answer)

A: The public lab designation indicates labs that will be available for use by any student outside of scheduled classes in the room. These locations and number of computers are:

  • Good Hall 201 - 6 PCs
  • BAC B201 - 19 Windows Machines
  • BAC C102 - 20 Windows Machines
  • Library - 25 (Mix of laptops and desktops, PCs and Macs)
  • BAC TLT Lab - 24 (Mix of Intel Based Macs, MacBooks, and PC Laptops)
  • VLCS 2073 - 18 Windows Machines
  • Ellis Cyber Café - 6 PCs
  • BAC P107 - 20 iMacs (Windows or Mac OS available)

Q: What about the other labs on campus? (view answer)

A: Funding for the replacement of departmental labs will be the responsibility of the departments requesting those labs. Departments are encouraged to look for grant money, special funding or other funding opportunities to continue the usage of these labs. CTS will continue to assist with purchases and installation of these machines, helping to ensure that departments are able to take advantage of bulk-purchasing prices that the campus will have.

Classroom Technology

As part of the campus mobile initiative, all faculty received laptops during the summer of 2007. All classrooms currently equipped with computers in the podium also have connections allowing for laptops to be used with the projectors and sound sytems built in to the room. In an effort to reduce the duplication of functionality, many of the computers will be removed from the podiums over the next few years.

Q: I always seem to have issues getting my laptop to work in the classrooms. Will these issues be addressed? (view answer)

A: Many of the issues experienced in the classroom are related to the amount of technology currently present in those locations. By removing the computers from the podiums (and in many cases the dvd players and vcrs), the technology should be much more reliable. With less buttons to press and wires to come loose, we expect the time required to set up for class and the potential for problems to decrease.

Employee Workstations

All employees will be provided with one computer (except in areas where the supervisor has indicated that groups can share a machine). An effort will be made to provide all employees with machines that match the type of work they perform. (This will effect the determination between laptops and desktops and how new the machines are.)

Q: What if I need to have more than one machine? (view answer)

A: Oftentimes the need for multiple computers is caused by a mismatch between your primary machine and the functionality you need from it. We will work to ensure that your computer meets your needs. If an additional computer is required, your department will be responsible for allocating funds for that machine.

Q: My department normally budgets to replace the employee workstations every couple of years. Can we still purchase new computers when we want? (view answer)

A: We appreciate departments planning ahead to ensure that their computers are upgraded. However, this approach favors departments with larger budgets and not necessarily those most in need of new computers. Because of this, we ask that you reduce your annual budget by the amount you would have previously budgeted for employee workstations. If you feel that your employee workstations will need to be upgraded from the standard specifications that CTS is using that year, your department will be responsible for funding these upgrades.

Q: I use very intensive applications. I'm not going to be stuck with an old computer am I? (view answer)

A: Individuals who use more intensive applications will be provided with a computer between 0-3 years old. Although specifications will change each year, these computers should be able to run most of the applications used by employees with no additional upgrades. If upgrades are required, your department will be responsible for budgeting funds for these upgrades.

Q: I use my computer primarily for Word and the Internet. I'm not going to have an ancient relic am I? (view answer)

A: Our goal is to ensure that all employees have a machine no more than 6 years old. When one of the 'power users' from the question above receives an upgrade, their previous computer will be redistributed to an individual in this category for up to 3 years. Most individuals in this category will always have a computer between 3-6 years old.

Q: What about student employees? (view answer)

A: Discretion is up to CTS and the department to determine the appropriate number and type of machines available. Departments are asked to pay attention when scheduling student employees to help limit the number of machines required or to enccourage the use of student-owned laptops when appropriate. (For example: Please try to avoid scheduling three employees during the same time slot, with none scheduled much of the rest of the day.)

Program Support

Some of the academic and administrative programs on campus require additional computing resources. These computers are often funded (at least initially) through grants or special-funding procedures. Unfortunately, CTS is not able to provide replacements for all of these resources. If departments wish to replace these computers, they will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities. However, by coordinating these purchases with CTS, they will be able to take advantage of the bulk pricing that CTS has secured.

Q: Ok, I've secured funding. Can I purchase anything I want? (view answer)

A: No. Although you've secured the funding, the machines still belong to the College and need to meet certain minimum specifications. If you plan to use these machines on the network or receive technical support from CTS, there are specific specifications the machines must meet. (This is similar to the specifications imposed upon students bringing computers to campus.) If the purchased equipment does not meet the required specifications, it may not be allowed on the network or receive technical support from CTS.

Q: I have equipment meeting the necessary specifications. Can I get help setting it up from CTS? (view answer)

A: Yes. If your computer meets the necessary specifications and you coordinated the purchase through CTS, we will help you with the standard setup of the machine. If you have specialized software or equipment attached to the machine, you may be responsible for installing and troubleshooting those items.

Q: Our program/lab currently has computers, but isn't up for replacement by CTS. Where can I get funding? (view answer)

A: There are several ways to secure funding. The three most common are through grants, the special funding procedure, and using your departmental budget. Here are examples of how some of the purchases were previously funded or may be funded in the future.

In support of the College's mission of sustainability and remaining fiscally responsible, CTS is pleased to announce a new pricing structure for users of the Ricoh Multi-Function Devices (MFDs) on campus. Since the beginning of this year, black and white prints have been reduced to 2.5 cents (down from 7 cents). Color prints and copies will now be 15 cents each (down from 25 cents). The charge for black and white copies will also be reduced to 5.5 cents each (down from 7 cents). It is our hope that these changes will positively affect your decision to send your print jobs to one of the MFDs whenever possible. Reducing our dependence on laser and ink jet printers on campus will in turn reduce the overall printing costs across campus.

Q: Why the big push for using MFDs anyhow? (view answer)

A: As you can see, the cost for printing to an MFD is significantly cheaper than printing to either a laser printer or a deskjet. We also have a solid relationship with Ikon that helps offset our maintenance and response time.

Q: What's included when I'm charged to use an MFD? (view answer)

A: Machine support, paper, and toner are all included in the per page costs.

Q: Will CTS continue to support laser printers? (view answer)

A: When it has been deemed necessary, e.g. large envelope printing needs, CTS will assist in the installation and support of the printers. Costs associated with paper, toner, and repair will be funded by the associated department as it has been.

Q: What if I want to buy my own laser printer? (view answer)

A: If the laser printer has been classified as a non-essential printer, costs associated with the installation and support will be the responsibility of the associated department. CTS will make recommendations for a reputable support vendor.

Q: What about deskjet printers? (view answer)

A: Very much like non-essential laser printers, those individuals who choose to keep these printers will be responsible for all costs associated with installation, support, ink, and paper.

Q: Are you saying that you are forcing me to give up my deskjet? (view answer)

A: No. CTS has and will continue to distribute MFDs around campus that are accessible to employees and students. We think you'll find that the quality and speed surpass that of an inkjet. Again, we are not saying that you cannot keep your deskjet, but it will be your department's responsibility for any and all associated costs.

Q: I want to print sensitive documents. How can I be sure that someone else won't see what I'm printing when I print to a central device? (view answer)
