Mandatory Immunization Policy
The Immunization Program of the Pennsylvania Department of Health recommends that all colleges and universities adopt a mandatory immunization policy. Because of this recommendation and the continued concerted efforts of the American College Health Association and the Center for Disease Control against vaccine preventable diseases, Juniata College has decided to adopt the following mandatory immunization requirements.
All entering students born after 1956 should have received two doses of live measles vaccine, the first on or after their first birthday. The two doses must be separated by at least five years (either MMR or MR single antigen measles vaccine is acceptable). Laboratory evidence of immunity is necessary if immunization cannot be documented.
All entering students should have received one dose of live virus rubella vaccine at twelve months of age or later.
All entering students should have received a primary series of DTP, DT, or Td and a booster within ten years.
All entering students should have received one dose of mumps vaccine given at twelve months of age or later.
TB screening within the past year is required of all students at high risk for TB as defined by the CDC (foreign born persons from high prevalence countries, persons with compromised immune system, close contacts of infectious TB cases, etc.).
All entering students should have received a primary series in childhood and a booster only if needed for travel after age 18.
All entering students should receive the Hepatitis B series in 3 doses.
The Pennsylvania State Health Department mandates the vaccination against meningitis unless a waiver is provided.
The responsibility for assuring that vaccination status is adequate and up-to-date rests with the student and his or her family. A careful review of past records is advised so that unnecessary immunization does not occur. These requirements will be strictly enforced. If they are not met by the beginning of the first semester, enrollment for the second semester will be contingent upon obtaining the required immunizations.
