Individual Tutoring

Peer tutoring is available to each student who desires additional help with subject material in a course that she or he may experience academic difficulty. In most cases, individualized assistance is available. Before requesting tutoring assistance for a course, students must discuss their academic performance with the course instructor. Where peer tutoring is not deemed appropriate by the tutoring coordinator, course instructor and, in some cases the ESL coordinator, alternative forms of assistance will be recommended to the student.

Group Tutoring

In select courses, tutoring is offered in the form of a group review session. Any student in these select courses may attend the group sessions; she or he need only sign an attendance sheet prepared for each meeting. The professor of these select courses will announce to the class when and where the group sessions are to be held. In some instances, you must attend the group sessions available before permission is granted for an individual tutor.

Responsibilities of Those Who Use Tutoring Services

Students / tutees understand that tutoring is a supplement to class preparation, class attendance and office-hours assistance from faculty. It is not intended to replace any of these critical academic responsibilities. Tutees are entitled to work regularly with a tutor who knows the subject and facilitates active learning. The number of hours of tutoring per week may not exceed the amount of time spent in lecture each week (three to four hours / week would be the maximum). Tutees are expected to arrive at prearranged meetings appropriately prepared. Tutees are to give advance notice when a tutoring session must be canceled. Any tutee that fails to show up for prearranged meetings more than two times is contacted and may have his or her tutoring privileges revoked. Evaluations are given at the end of the semester to provide Academic Support Services with information regarding your tutor and the tutoring program.
