The mission of the college archives is to preserve documents and objects important to the history and operation of Juniata College. Our collection includes documents concerning the founding of the college, early institutional records, presidential papers, trustee records, and various files related to faculty and alumni. In addition the College Archives contains a comprehensive collection of the major publications of the college, from the earliest campus newspapers, course catalogs and yearbooks up to the present day. Individual student records are not available for public use.
We curate a small collection of objects related to the history of the college. In various locations throughout the library, we have on display or stored:
- M.G. Brumbaugh’s cradle
- The “Orphan’s Chair” (made by students during the smallpox outbreak of 1878)
- Dictionary stand from the college’s first library
- Gas street light from campus, circa 1900
- Ephrata printing press
- Miscellaneous college memorabilia and early furniture
Our primary focus for the future will be to accept and preserve materials generated by the board of trustees and the president’s office, along with a selection of any donated documents that relate to student life. As a part of that process, we consult with library staff and the institutional history committee, and also consider past practices of the archives. The Archives lacks sufficient space to keep an exhaustive amount of material from various departments; consequently, we focus on major campus events or materials of major historic interest to the college. The archives may at some later date develop a separate film archives and may also collaborate with the art museum to produce a comprehensive historic college photo collection.
We maintain web pages that describe the functions of the college archives, offer small online exhibits, and provide relevant links related to the college and regional history. We also work with the art department in the creation and maintenance of exhibits in the college history room.
Access to the College Archives is arranged by appointment only. Contact the college archivist at (814)641-5315 or the library director's Office at 814-641-3452 at least one week in advance. Juniata College faculty, students and staff may also contact the Reference Department for assistance. No one will be admitted to the archives without an appointment.
