Intercultural Learning Assessment Committee

Juniata’s Intercultural Learning Assessment Committee (ILAC) began meeting in 2009 as part of the Global Engagement Initiative, and in response to NSSE results that suggested we were less successful in engaging our students with difference than the national average. ILAC members seek to 1) identify what students at Juniata learn in the area of intercultural competency, and 2) determine how we can best improve that learning. Juniata's 2011 NSSE results indicate we have made progress in this area.

ILAC includes representation by the Center for International Edcuation, Campus Ministry, the Dean of Students, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Institutional Research, International Studies, Psychology, SoTL, the Unity House, and World Languages and Cultures.

Juniata's ILAC was highlighted as a Best Practice, on page 26 of the "High-Impact Practices" section of the NSSE Annual Results 2011 publication.


ILAC members presented at the 2009 CLAC Intercultural Competency Across the Curriculum Conference, and invited the campus community to view the 2011 NAFSA webinar: Improve Your Intercultural Training Through Transformative Learning. Beginning fall 2011, Juniata is implementing and evaluating a Teagle-Funded pre- and post-study abroad assessment instrument for student learning developed by the GLCA.

Priorities for 2011-2012 include 1) operationalizing Juniat's "Desired Intercultural Competencies"* within the context of the institutional strategic plan; 2) develop a multi-year assessment plan; and 3) evaluate and improve the pre- / during- / post-study abroad process.
