Educational Setting

The University of Veracruz was founded in 1944 and is one of the top 5 universities in Mexico. The EEE (Escuela para Estudiantes Extranjeros), the local school for foreign students, is a part of the University of Veracruz and most students who are studying abroad in Xalapa take classes there.  You can also take some of your classes through the regular academic departments at the University of Veracruz as well. The University of Veracruz has a wide selection of course options ranging from the humanities to the natural sciences. In total there are 32 academic departments to choose from. The EEE has a course selection based more on language and Mexican culture. Students with a more advanced level of Spanish tend to take more courses at the University of Veracruz, while the students with less Spanish experience take more courses at the EEE. The general rule is that students should have at least 4 semesters of college level Spanish under their belt to be ready for a University course.  In the end, it really depends on what the individual student is comfortable with.

Before classes begin there is also a two week session of intensive Spanish and Mexican history as a part of the BCA orientation. BCA also offers a couple of courses that only BCA students are allowed to take, one of which is an online course. The EEE and various University academic departments are either within walking distance or a short bus ride away from your home stay.
